Naytiive – Poison (2022)

Through his single ‘Redlight’, Naytiive drew us into a liberating daydream that helped us set our worries aside while lifting our spirits. He is now taking us into a very different scenario with his track ‘Poison’, set in a dive bar where the main character is a regular. Tapping into the addictive nature of a poisonous relationship with alcohol, the single touches on the yearning for more and the excitement of the next hit.

While his music usually has a feel-good energy, there is something different to this track that has us diving into untapped depths. It is a wonderful showcase of the expanse of his musicality, while still allowing you to escape from the world around you. The immersive tones of the track play out like a movie, cutting off reality for just a moment.

‘Poison’ shimmers with a delicate touch through the opening. There is a really soulful feeling to the music that ripples out into the nether like a glimmering lake. Woven into the soulfulness of the opening is a building feeling that exhales in the chorus. It is a really sophisticated melody that slowly creeps into your senses to get you bopping to the rhythm. The soulfulness gives way to a burst of funky tones that makes you want to move to the rhythm. The dynamic flow of the instrumentation is stunning and really showcases the mastery of Naytiive. As you journey through the melody, you can feel the bright colours that come from a night out as the main character starts to drink more and the hard edges of reality start to soften.

The melody is really amazing, but it is his vocal performance that really makes the track. As you ride the building feeling of the opening tones, his performance takes the soulful flows to another level. At times, you feel like there is a double meaning to the lyrics as he edges around comparing addiction to alcohol with the addiction to a toxic relationship. When the music bursts for the funkier tones, his vocals rise to match, spinning you around in a kaleidoscope of energy. The chorus is really catchy and makes you want to sing along while it sinks into the recesses of your brain only to pop up randomly throughout the day. Halfway through the single, the pace of the funky tones drops, with the vocals getting an almost RnB vibe to them. At this point, he infuses an almost frenetic need into his performance.

Soulful, funky, catchy and designed to make you move, ‘Poison’ by Naytiive is a track that leaves you thinking after you turn up the volume and escape from reality for a little while. Both the vocals and melody shift effortlessly from soulful to funk and everywhere in between. There is a masterful touch to the track that highlights the sophistication of Naytiive’s music.
