National Service – Repeater (2022)

Meld 80s synth-rock sounds with a contemporary alt-rock style and you might have an idea of UK-based trio National Service. Since their debut single ‘A Little More Time’, Fintan Campbell (vocals), Iain Kelly (guitar) and Matthew Alston (drums) have received critical acclaim from the press and audiences alike. With features on Vents Magazine, Music Crowns, Indie Central Music, Clash, Reprezent Radio, Kerrang! Radio and BBC Radio 6 (to name a few), the lads have a reputation for being “unique, outstanding and unforgettable”. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Repeater’.

Following their well-received song ‘Milktooth’, National Service shows an evolution in their sound with ‘Repeater’. The second track from their upcoming EP (to be released early next year), ‘Repeater’ brings hazy drums and dynamic guitars into an ethereal cinematic soundscape. Once again taking us back to the 1980s with their post-punk meets new wave sound, the lads’ present audiences with a nostalgic flair in their haunting track. Yet, while there is a strong leaning toward yesteryear, interjections of alt-rock make the song appealing to modern-day audiences – an edginess that is distinctly National Service.

Recorded and mixed by National Service themselves, the fuzzy distortion of ‘Repeater’ tosses listeners into a kaleidoscopic sonic swirl. When speaking about the production of ‘Repeater’, National Service explain that this is a true experimental take on music – “at the start of the first lockdown back in about June 2020, we started a ‘round robin’ to freshen up our writing and get out of a bit of a slump…we were conscious that if we didn’t mix up the writing process, we’d end up with a load of songs that were formulaic and uninspired. ‘Repeater’ was the fourth round robin we did…the overarching driver of everything was that the whole song hammered from start to finish with a palpable sense of cathartic release…”
