Nathaniel Paul – The World We’re Living In (2023)

Hitting our virtual desk in 2020 with ‘It’s All A Rage’, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nathaniel Paul has been featured several times on The Other Side Reviews. Yet, it is not only our heads he has turned with international acclaim across Europe, North America and South America. As one part of the award-winning duo The Bergamot, Paul established himself as a talented producer and musician “making music…with rich storytelling…distinctive floaty vocals and uplifting instruments…” (Neon Music). His solo project took flight in 2020 with the debut single ‘Virtue’, followed closely by his well-received track ‘It’s All A Rage’. Join us as we delve into the most recent addition to his discography, ‘The World We’re Living In’.

Following his acoustic single ‘Salty Air’, Nathaniel Paul finds a delicate balance between organic and synthetic sounds in ‘The World We’re Living In’. Filled with piano, guitar and an interspersed harmonica, an old-school acoustic folk style jumps out at you; however, the tinkling sprinkles of synths bring a charming modern-day folk-pop to the song. Adding his soft, mellifluous vocals, Paul brings a simplistic, almost barebones quality to the track standing alongside artists like Janis Ian and James Blake.

While the melody is captivating with a sophisticated elegance below a whimsical innocence, the rawness of its vulnerability leaks through in poetic lyricism. Recorded and produced in Arizona, ‘The World We’re Living In’ reflects on the fragility of humanity in our modern-day society and digital culture. This is also clearly evident in the accompanying music video as a “reflection of where our culture is at…”

Taken from his upcoming sophomore album Turpentine (set for release in summer 2023), ‘The World We’re Living In’ is sincere, sentimental, thought-provoking and really something special.
