Several years back, a few decades or more, getting a tattoo was considered rebellious, unconventional, and an expression of individuality set in an inky stamp. Today, the tattoo remains an expression of individuality, but is still unconventional and rebellious? In a tattoo-laden society, it seems more unique to not have any ink – rebelliousness through non-participation. Exploring this interesting concept is singer-songwriter Nathaniel Paul with his latest single, ‘The Girl With No Tattoo’.
Inspired by the meteoric rise of tattoo culture and its growing acceptance of being the norm, ‘The Girl With No Tattoo’ tilts its head and glances at how self-expression has changed when it comes to ink. Paul explores the complexities of having or not having a tattoo when it comes to self-discovery and growth. Some people might consider tattoos to be reminders of past experiences with fondness, but do you really want your ex-partner’s name on you forever… or at least until you have it altered or removed? Paul explains:
“Tattoos have become so widespread that not having one feels unique in itself. Branding has become part of our skin, but now, it seems like having no tattoo is a defining choice. I wanted to celebrate that uniqueness… Altering your body has become so prolific, so I think it’s really important to be confident in who you are. You are beautiful just by simply being you…”

Self-recorded and produced, ‘The Girl With No Tattoo’ diverts from 2024’s indie-folk-tinged ‘It’s All Blue’ infusing an indie-rock tone with slices of laidback alternative rock and funk. A bold bass meets soaring guitars with dynamic drums crashing beneath all uniting in a harmonic melody. The melody is enchanting, but it is Paul’s warm vocals that add empowering encouragement and positivity to ‘The Girl With No Tattoo’.
