Natalie Clark – Late Train (2023)

With powerhouse vocals, an optimistic beat and messages of empowerment, singer-songwriter Natalie Clark is, as Richard Branson said, “absolutely and utterly stunning”. From her 2021 singles ‘I See You’ and ‘Ready To Roll’ to 2023’s ‘Mission’, US-based Clark connects with listeners exploring human experiences and encouraging people to pursue their dreams. When we left her, she was enthusiastically empowering people who might feel unheard in their lives. Today, she takes us on another journey of self-discovery and empowerment in ‘Late Train’.

As with her previous singles ‘Mission’ and ‘ARMOR’, Clark leans toward contemporary pop with her latest release ‘Late Train’. Yet, while she continues to explore various flavours of pop, ‘Late Train’ inserts a sense of soul into the melody. Soft and soothing, an acoustic piano drives the single with rich percussion flowing throughout the track. Opening with the mellifluous simplicity of finger clicking and piano, ‘Late Train’ presents a minimalistic soundscape; however, crescendos to a dynamic drum belying soulful vocals enhance the catchiness and kaleidoscopic nature of the single.

I could compare Natalie Clark to Amy Winehouse or Norah Jones in their obscurity but I’m unsure if this is fair or not. Winehouse and Jones are distinctive in their off-kilter styles, whereas Clark teeters between clarity in modern-day soul/pop tones and a mysterious sense of enigmatic perplexity. In ‘Late Train’, her mystical vocals bring richness to the bold track with meaningful warmth creating a sound that is entirely Natalie Clark.

Sincere, sentimental, passionate and filled with hopefulness, Natalie Clark takes us on a journey of comfort in ‘Late Train’.
