nasmore – When It Feels So Fake (2023)

Living in a world of pretentiousness and false appearances, being unpretentious can leave you an outcast. We need to hit those stereotypical goals of being the ideal family man (or woman), having two marvellous children, buying a new car every year, living in the poshest area, mixing with the high society crowd, and all while looking fabulous in the latest fashion trending on social media. Just typing it makes me tired, so imagine trying to live this idealistic fantasy life.

As fabulous and wonderful and perfect as a person may appear, there is always the hint of vulnerability, insecurity and a deep desire to spend the day in your pyjamas binge-watching Law & Order. No, it’s not the right thing to do so we remain in the fakeness even if it means bolstering the beautiful appearance with medication hiding anxiety, fear, angst, frustration and melancholic misery. This is where nasmore comes in with his new single ‘When It Feels So Fake’.

Following his well-received single ‘Welcome To The Hell!’, ‘When It Feels So Fake’ captures the tension between authentic individuality and fashionable appearance. Recorded with renowned guitarist Neil Taylor and vocalists Gabriel and Waz, ‘When It Feels So Fake’ shifts from a classic rock tone to an alternative rock sound. Inspired by Nickelback and Imagine Dragons with a Foo Fighters chaser, nasmore tips his hat to 90s alternative rock but retains a contemporary edginess dissolving time and space in a monster tune.

While the pounding drums match Taylor’s scorching guitar in a ferocious beat to have you tapping your toes while dying for the mosh pit, ‘When It Feels So Fake’ has a sincere sentimentality lurking in the chaos. With his gruff vocals, nasmore both condemns the superficiality of reality but also captures the intimate intensity of facing this pretentious existence – like stripping a band-aid off a bloody wound. nasmore explains:

“This song encapsulates the moment when everything around you feels superficial and you are yearning for something genuine. I wanted to create a sonic space where listeners can confront these feelings head-on.”

Sincere, brutally honest and introspective but with grittiness slivering through the tune, ‘When It Feels So Fake’ is “an anthem for anyone who’s ever felt adrift in a world of pretence.”
