Naomi Pacifique – Was It the Dregs of Night (2022)

Naomi Pacifique used spoken-word vocals to bring the poetry and intimacy of moments that stay with us long after they end in ‘The Sea is Coming In’. Her new single ‘Was it the Dregs of Night’ continues the use of natural movements introduced in her last single, while exploring the potential malaises of non-monogamy. Using the push and pull of a tornado, she brings a messy dance to our ears that swirls around us with a strange sort of intimacy.

As the winds of sound drive you up and down the melody, the lyrics explore some mishaps of polyamory. Written in collaboration with musicians in Amsterdam, the single features Rafael Manuel (guitar, bass) and Tancrède D. Kummer (drums). With rhythms and patterns that have you riding the winds of this messy dance, the single brings us another step closer to her upcoming album.

The singular sharp note that opens ‘Was it the Dregs of Night’ really grabs your attention, turning your head toward the single. The guitars start to rise into a more melodic movement that brings the first push of winds slowly forming into a larger storm. As the other instruments make their way into the melody, the pressure of the winds builds with a light howl in the background. You can feel the chill of the wind before the storm caresses your skin, before the drums roll across the ground and sweep the winds against you. Through the melody, you can feel the messy dance of the single that wonderfully catches you in the movement. It is a very different sound from anything else you might hear, but uses each instrument and note to perfection. Every note has been carefully crafted to add to the dips and dives of the melody that preceded a rise and then glide down. There is a touch of psychedelia to the music that merges with the rather relaxed vibes that allow you to soak up the beauty of the storm.

Dancing between each note are Pacifique’s vocals that bring her spoken-word poetry to the single. Her performance slowly rides the cool winds of the guitar through the opening. The flow of her delivery is rather hypnotic and made richer by the backing vocals that bolster her movement like air currents catching under your wings. Through her performance, you are drawn into the mishaps of polyamory, while sinking into the malaise that can come after them.

Naomi Pacifique catches you in a messy dance packed with the rise and fall of emotions, following relationship mishaps in ‘Was it the Dregs of Night’. From the first note, the melody carefully crafts the notes to create the twirl of a storm and the messy dance of emotions. The poetic lyrics ride the winds of the melody with Pacifique’s delivery hypnotically pulling you further into the storm.
