Nana Kottens – One More Chance (2022)

Fusing together African and American cultures, Ghanaian-born singer-songwriter Nana Kottens blends elements of pop, hip-hop, soul, reggae, country and RnB in his sound. This is my introduction to the African artist, but he is already receiving critical acclaim from the press like Sinusoidal Music, GH Vibe Music, and FV Music Blog reaching audiences across the globe. Along with reviews, Nana Kottens is receiving airtime on various playlists and radio streaming (including iHeart radio). The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘One More Chance’.

Described as having “gorgeous harmonies” (Sinusoidal Music) and “soothing rhythm and blues” (Young Stars Music), Nana Kottens adopts a pop meets RnB sound in ‘One More Chance’. The charming vocals slide atop a simplistic arrangement of acoustic guitars and drums to really touch your heart – metaphorically of course. Interestingly enough, while one could easily place the song alongside Billboard Chart-toppers like Shawn Mendes, there is a world vibe to the love song creating a unique edginess to the music. I’m unsure how to explain it, but a strong African beat throb beneath the melody.

In agreement with Sinusoidal Music, the instrumentation and vocals are gorgeously executed with true harmony. Moreover, the melodic flow of guitars, drums and Kottens dulcet tones bring an intense intimacy to ‘One More Chance’ clutching at your heart. Seeing as ‘One More Chance’ is a reflective love song, it seems apt that the melody suits the theme of “giving him one more chance”. The thing is, while there is a tinge of sadness and melancholy in the track, its soothing quality makes it a toe-tapping, grin-inducing song filled with joviality.

“’One More Chance’ is an apologetic song. The singer reflects on meeting an old girlfriend, reflecting on the good conversations and memories they shared…I personally think that in life we sometimes got to give people second chances. The song is an opportunity to reflect on personal engagement with loved ones and ask for forgiveness if you have offended anyone.”
