Naga Brujo – Sick Sad World (2022)
Formed in 2013, American group Naga Brujo has been bringing audiences a unique brand of rock for almost one decade. Beginning as a live band playing dive bars and venues around Austin, Texas, Naga Brujo knows how to own a stage with their energetic enthusiasm for music. Yet, while reputed as a phenomenal live band, the dynamic foursome ooze passion in their studio releases as well. The latest addition to Naga Brujo’s well-received discography is the single ‘Sick Sad World’.
Described by The Punk Head as “unpredictable, moody and primal…”, Naga Brujo has an eclectic, insatiably fascinating sound to share. Following their track ‘Stripper Face’, ‘Sick Sad World’ is the band’s first release in two years – a post-pandemic piece if you will. The band explained that “once the world returned to some semblance of normalcy they were going to hit the ground running with a new EP…” and ‘Sick Sad World’ is the first from the upcoming Canceled.
Potentially labelled as a punk song, Naga Brujo retains the brashness of their previous punk-inspired work. Yet, while the lads and lady continue with their hard-hitting punk style, ‘Sick Sad World’ infuses elements of hard rock and melodic metal into the music. An elegant arrangement of pounding drums and dynamic guitars builds a melodic foundation pulsating with angsty energy. Weave the male and female vocals through the tune and you have an almost palpable grittiness bursting with raw ferocity.
The first single from the new EP Canceled, ‘Sick Sad World’ touches on, well exactly that – a sick sad world. Exploring the impending gloom of being trapped in a post-capitalist society, the new single aggressively exudes frustration, despair and anger. Perhaps the theme song for Orwell’s dystopian existence in 1984.
Sincere, sentimental and brutally honest, Naga Brujo proves they are a force to be reckoned with in ‘Sick Sad World’.
