Nadia Vaeh – Friends U Couldn’t Keep (2023)

With a natural penchant for the dramatic, singer-songwriter Nadia is described as “electrifying and explosive feel-good fun all in one magenta-coloured package”. From energetic shows as a musician to a performer in a local Atlanta circus, Vaeh captivates and connects with audiences holding her hand out to people who need a safe space to express themselves. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Friends U Couldn’t Keep’.

Inspired by life and the gritty underbelly most choose to avoid, Nadia Vaeh uses her music to increase mental health awareness and its de-stigmatisation. A desire to express feelings of frustration, rage and inner turmoil through moving melodies. When speaking about ‘Friends U Couldn’t Keep’, she explains:

“I was inspired to write a song that expressed my frustration with fake friends and to make peace with closing the door on some long-standing friendships that were just out of bounds and out of balance. They had been for a while, but there is always that wake-up moment where you’re like, “No, I deserve better”. This song is all about moving forward with the people who really matter and support you and your dreams.”

Following her well-received singles ‘Truth Hurts’ and ‘Promise Not To Kill You’, Nadia Vaeh taps into her inner Paramore with ‘Friends U Couldn’t Keep’. Co-produced with Tyler Spratt, the single fuses aspects of pop-punk with trip-hop wrapped in a soothing indie-pop package. Mellifluous it may be with a floating sense of serenity but hints of frustration, aggression and inner conflict prick through the hazy sonic swirl.

Co-written with Dion Shaw, the lyricism brings a sense of profoundness to the single. Reminiscent of Hayley Williams, her rich vocals caress a listener embracing you in a comfortable hug. Interestingly, while mellow and charming, a sarcastic bite exists in the song, particularly the chorus. Vaeh slides along a smooth note in a wistful serenade; but, edginess strikes with the lyrics “fuck you” adding sass to the drawn-out breathiness.
