myah – lightning (2024)
Over the past year, we at The Other Side Reviews have come across a plethora of diverse artists – from those you never want to forget to those you wish you hadn’t heard. Singer-songwriter myah has made an impression and is one of those we are delighted to have discovered. Eager to connect with audiences with relatable, original and authentic songs, US-based myah acts like that old friend who you might not speak to regularly, but you are always able to “pick up the pieces” with ease. Come with us as we chat once again with our friend in ‘lightning’.
Following her well-received singles ‘the lobby’, ‘coney island’ and ‘déjà vu’ – the latter two included in a double-track EP titled myah’s version – ‘lightning’ showcases another facet to the singer-songwriter’s musicality. Recorded and produced in Los Angeles with Noah Barer, who previously worked on her single ‘everything’, myah uses a simplistic brand of folk-pop drawing listeners in with a rather easy, chilled-out, mellifluous, laidback calm.
While this barebones soundscape has its charm with acoustic piano, percussion and guitars; there is a kaleidoscopic quality bringing soul-stirring emotions to the composition. For me, I imagine ‘lightning’ as both an anthemic festival tune for first-pumping, grinning audiences, as well as an infectious sing-along song at an intimate open mic night. Finding a line between raw vulnerability and jovial optimism, myah evokes strong emotion in ‘lightning’ with its skin-chilling, head-turning rush of music.
The melody for ‘lightning’ is intricate and complex, but the lyricism is as significant executed with a gentle flow of uncomplicated elegance. myah explains:
“… I just had this thought in my mind that I couldn’t get rid of which was two people falling in love and how exciting that feeling is, so I wanted to try and capture it in this song. I’ve been going through a pretty rough breakup, and I just wanted to write a song that was about falling in love… This is the type of song where you can close your eyes and just disappear for a moment, I think it’s very cinematic which is on brand for me and I like.”
