myah – hurricane (2024)

Florida. Known for Disney World, Legoland, Daytona Beach, and lots of orange juice in sunny but sometimes hurricane-y weather. One of the largest USA tourist attractions, everyone knows about Florida. What they might not know is singer-songwriter myah – although, given her natural musical talent she is sure to be a hit. We came across myah a few months ago with the release of ‘now or never’ and continued to follow her with the track ‘notice you’. Today she graces our virtual pages and eager ears with the single ‘hurricane’. Join us as we delve further into her delightful discography.

Recorded and produced with Tripped N Sat, ‘hurricane’ shifts from the lighter pop-influenced tones of ‘notice you’ to a darker blend of indie-pop and pop-rock. Deemed the “emo Taylor Swift”, one can hear the hints of Swift in her vocals; however, the small lilt is about the only reminiscence I find evident. myah’s voice teeters along the line of bright, joviality and dark emo-rock as she strolls along with profound obscurity.

To me, myah’s dark voice is the real stand-out element of ‘hurricane’. Dull and deep but warm and hopeful, the sophisticated vulnerability astounds. Yet, the melody is as enthralling with pounding drums, a bold bass and searing guitars. Brimming with vintage pop-rock heaviness, ‘hurricane’ embraces the sounds of the 90s/2000s; however, a contemporary indie-pop haze flutters in the nostalgic tune. I find it intriguing that while the single is titled ‘hurricane’ insinuating tempestuous grooves, stillness lingers as an anchor in the tumultuous rush of music.

Inspired by life in its totality, myah uses her poetic lyricism to share intimate stories; however, ‘hurricane’ is oddly inspired by her friend suggesting she should “write a song using the word ‘hurricane’, so I did.” Interestingly, as the world whips about her, ‘hurricane’ is actually a love anthem about the hurricane – tumultuous and sincere in a dark humour type of way. Leading up to her debut album, myah sweeps us away with her new single.
