myah – familiar (2024)

Eager to share her moving music with listeners, singer-songwriter myah has had international success with songs like ‘flames’ and ‘hurricane’; however, the melodies may be engaging but her lyricism is what defines the poignancy of the songs. Unafraid of tackling raw emotion with an intimate personal narrative, myah takes listeners on a rollercoaster ride with her intricate words. From her exposition of a desire for simpler things in ‘flames’ to the tumultuous love anthem ‘hurricane’, each chord, whisper, hum and breath is intricately interwoven in a soul-stirring anthem. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘familiar’.

Leading up to her anticipated debut album, set for release later this year, ‘familiar’ follows the well-received ‘flames’ and ‘hurricane’. Recorded and produced with Olivier Bassil, myah shifts from an alternative pop sound with slight avant-garde sentimentality to a commercial pop tone. Interestingly while the “nostalgic pop girlie anthem” might be a “little Taylor Swift…”, its vintage pop shiver gives the track an old-school vibe with an inimitable myah eclecticism.

Drawing together a twinkling keyboard, shimmering synths, pulsating beats and myah’s rich vocals, ‘familiar’ is a melody with hushed delicacy and weighty boldness. From the outset, the track is a vivid, almost palpable rush of comfortable warmth, a fluttering breeze of tender sincerity, and a heart-breaking journey through the “butterflies-in-your-stomach” excitement of a new romance.

One aspect I love about ‘familiar’ is how myah captures the core of an awkward, gut-wrenching, heart-bursting rush of love as a thread through the generations. An opening verse tells the story from the 1950s, while the next looks at the 1980s with its big hair and shoulder pads; a consistent silvery girlie-pop lingering demonstrates the consistency of raw emotion for modern-day audiences.

Sincere, sentimental, skin-tingling and grin-inducing, ‘familiar’ is the best way to move from the brightness of summer to autumnal appeal.

In addition to the single, myah released an official audio video for ‘myah’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube channel… while you’re there sure to view more of her music like her official music video for ‘notice you’ and her live performance at the Troubadour.
