My Satellite – Denial (2024)

Originally the brainchild of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Bryan Stage, My Satellite is a combination of cacophonous harmony in crazy musical swirls. After a few lineup changes, with members moving to other bands or stages in their lives, Andy Marshall (bass, guitar and keyboards) and Dan Grimes (drummer) join Stage in the US-based trio. Inspired by artists like Tame Impala and Radiohead, shimmers of grunge cling to indie-pop melodies; however, a uniqueness breathes from My Satellite with their obscure pop meets rock songs. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Denial’.

Following the well-received singles ‘Minotaur’ and ‘Sing Your Sorrows’, ‘Denial’ is the latest track from their upcoming album PERSON. The album is a true labour of love worked over the better part of a decade to explore the existential issues of reality and the core of humanity. Touching on life journeys with tumultuous dips into love, loss, vulnerability, inner turmoil and hopeful self-growth, PERSON really is about a person. In ‘Denial’, My Satellite taps into experiences of romance – the lust, infatuation, arguments and possible break-up. The band explains:

“This song is about that morning after a couple’s first big fight. The first time when hurtful things are said. There is yelling. There are tears. The song comes in after all that. It’s that awkward time when things are still raw, not fully resolved, but one partner presses the other to put it behind them and enjoy the day and the subsequent night happily together. It’s a song that doesn’t wish to deal with the reality that this row is the first big crack in the relationship. It’s the first sign of the eventual demise of the relationship but, still blinded by infatuation, neither partner sees it for what it is.”

Unlike the wistful falling into a psychedelic twirl of confusion of ‘Sing Your Sorrows’, ‘Denial’ is an energetic slash of funk mixed with blissful psychedelic charm and an alluring pop tone. While the mix of dreamy synths, a bold bass, powerful guitars and pulsating drums is blissful, it is the juxtaposition of electric tunes with profound themes that offers something special.
