My Cousin’s Girlfriend’s House – Wasting Away (2022)

While corporate jobs are viewed as the traditional path in life, they have a monotony to them that is hard to miss. This monotony is touched on by My Cousin’s Girlfriend’s House in their energetic single ‘Wasting Away’. As the single moves on from this, the band considers the obstacles you can face when trying to pave a path away from the corporate norm.

Brian Quirk, Andrew Hight and Pete Long formed the band in 2020 pulling on a range of influences. Since their debut EP in 2020, they have been moulding and crafting their sound into the more mature vibes we hear today. Mixed with the energetic tones of the single is an aggressively upbeat flow that will get you moving to the band’s rhythm.

‘Wasting Away’ builds up to the aggressive flow of the melody with a rather subdued opening. This leads to a rise of guitars that have you bouncing to their movement. There is a slightly old-school pop-punk feeling to the melody that makes you want to turn the volume all the way up while rocking out. This feeling also enhances the upbeat flow of the music that brings the best elements of melodic angst to life. There is a punch to the music that merges with the aggressively upbeat vibes to really get you bouncing off the walls. From start to finish, there is never a dull moment to the single as the energy of the band flies out of their instruments and directly into your veins.

It is not only the melody that has you bouncing off the walls as the vocals pack their own pop-punk punch. They use the opening lyrics to pack obstacles in front of you, only to swipe them away with a little self-love. The lyrics are packed with the negative things that people tell you when you let them know you want to take a path that is off the normal route. These things are woven into the monotony of walking the path that society wants you to. Everything changes as you hit the chorus that is filled with sing-along vocals that make you want to shout out with the band. It is almost impossible to listen to the vocal performance and not want to rock out and sing along. Each word has been packed with an infectious energy that is undeniably upbeat in its aggression.

My Cousin’s Girlfriend’s House has you bouncing off the walls, shouting along to the lyrics and completely rocking out to their single ‘Wasting Away’. The music has an infectious bounce that you can’t really deny, while the vocals pack a serious punch. Through the single, they hit out at naysayers and consider the path away from corporate norms.
