My Cousin’s Girlfriend’s House – Going (2022)
Influenced by a variety of artists and genres, US-based My Cousin’s Girlfriend’s House is somewhat of a musical mixed bag. Possibly labelled as a pop-punk meets indie-rock group, the trio’s music is filled with hard-hitting lyrics and bouncy melodies…then again, defining a group with such diversity is near impossible. Established in the Philadelphia DIY music scene, Brain Quirk, Andrew Hight and Pete Long have a strong fanbase; however, they are building an international fanbase with features on blogs like Send Me Your Ears, The Honey Pop, Its All Indie, PopFad and Havoc Underground. The latest addition to their discography is ‘Going’.
Following the well-received track ‘Wasting Away’, the threesome return to the sounds of 90s pop-rock with ‘Going’. Upbeat, toe-tapping, jovial and bouncy, the lads wrap you in a bubblegum pink sonic bubble. The infectious vocals are interwoven into a guitar-led melodic rhythm. The thing is, while the track has a strong pop-rock flavour, the movements from shouted vocals, pounding drums and rock-inspired guitar riffs make it a little edgier than the average Blink 182 meets Good Charlotte group.
I grew up with 90s rock and loved the happiness of pop-rock songs, so you can imagine how much I love ‘Going’. Blinding brightness oozes from the passionate song and I am transported to those carefree days of teenage-dom (am I showing my age here?). Wistful, whimsical and heart-warming, the harmonic melody lifts a person’s soul with a deep sigh of relief. The thing is, while there is happiness to ‘Going’ the concept is much more profound.
As with ‘Wasting Away’, My Cousin’s Girlfriend’s House touches on the deeper challenges of daily life in ‘Going’. In ‘Wasting Away’ it was living with everyday monotony, and in ‘Going’ they highlight the pain of “admitting your mistakes and stagnant growth…” What I love is how these desperate themes are lightened in the buoyant melodies; so, you’re talking about profound stuff but remain optimistic in the jolly, smile-inducing tune. Personally, I love it!
