Mute – Cambio de Estrategia (2023)

While the band Mute was only formed in 2004, the band members have been sharing their natural talents with audiences since the mid-1990s. Drawing together their diverse experience and influences, Victor Prieto (vocals and guitar), Ángel Boronat (guitar), Carlos Garcia (bass) and Jorge Valero (drums) create a sound that is both refreshing but with a nostalgic leaning toward pop and rock of the 80s and 90s. With coverage from Afondar En La Cultura, El Mundo De Tulsa and Todo Indie, it is clear to see Mute are reaching audiences across their native Spain, but adding features on Sinusoidal Music, Music Arena GH and TPJL News, and the lads are hitting ears far beyond Spanish borders.

Hot on the heels of their EP, El Enigma de los Reptiles, Mute introduce a stronger, more powerful rock sound in ‘Cambio de Estrategia’. One of the first releases since 2019, the diverse style is evidence of an evolution of Mute’s sound honed during the “pandemic years”. Now back with a bolder stance, the band moves from synth-pop ‘Nada Que Perder’ to grunge meets pop-rock ‘Cambio de Estrategia’. As I mentioned, while there is a nostalgic leaning toward the 90s, Mute also incorporate modern-day rock tones in the single. Think Green Day meeting The Killers in a hard-hitting sonic package.

Needless to say, ‘Cambio de Estrategia’ is a Spanish single so, not speaking Spanish myself, I honestly have no idea what they are saying. What I do know is music is universal with a global understanding behind evocative melodies. Serene and sincere, there is a mellifluous warmth in ‘Cambio de Estrategia’. Yet, while a mellow, soothing song, there is also a vulnerability, desperation and rawness in the sophisticated production.

“’Cambio de Estrategia’ talks about the attitude towards life and how we react to the unforeseen. We have all gone through extreme experiences in recent years, difficult situations that make us reflect on ourselves and our situation. Daily we are influenced by opinion leaders, politicians, pseudo-journalists, television talk shows and experts in everything who give us a vision with only one option: settle in the complaint. There may be no shortage of reasons but there are more options and the main one is simply to live…” – Mute on ‘Cambio de Estrategia’
