Music UnLtd. – THIS IS IT (2023)

Incomparable, inimitable and insatiable, India-based quintet Music UnLtd. Bring an eclecticism to rival many others. With influences from classic rock to pop-rock, psychedelia and reggae, the group’s sound is as intriguing as it is intoxicating. This is my introduction to Music UnLtd. but their discography spans almost a decade including the well-received debut EP And Then I Saw Her, 2019’s single ‘Play Me A Song’ and the more recent ‘Yahi Toh Hai’. Come with me as I delve into their music with the latest single, ‘THIS IS IT’.

Following the alternative rock ‘Yahi Toh Hai’, ‘THIS IS IT’ combines elements of rock with tinges of electronica and the distinctive sitar – a long-necked Indian lute. While the sitar is definitely one of the more interesting aspects of Music UnLtd. bringing a cultural flair to the single, it is the texturing of the melody that lifts listeners to another sonic dimension. Yadhunandan Nagaraj’s pounding drums match Kevin Chetti’s dynamic guitar and Govind Gawli’s bold bass in a rock design. Harmonically fusing but each retaining a distinctive presence in the united whole. The keys, played by Stephen Veigas, contribute to ‘THIS IS IT’ but with a tinged fluttering in the background.

The melody for ‘THIS IS IT’ is enchanting but the lyrics bring a poignant profoundness to the song. Melancholic and vulnerable, Milin captures the core of human fragility in his raw vocals. The thing is, just as there is a rawness sliding through ‘THIS IS IT’, a warmth exists finding hopefulness in the mire of despair. Milin explains:

“The song is about the trials and tribulations of a composer-musician… The ups and downs, highs and lows, moments of euphoria and disappointment that one goes through in one’s journey through life. Always trying, always hoping that something somewhere will work out…”
