Motherland – Ocean Drive (2022)

Describing their sound as “…unapologetically loud…”, Motherland is a refreshing breath of air in a sometimes stagnating alternative rock scene. Comprised of veteran musicians, the UK-based quintet melds their diverse experiences, journeys and knowledge in Motherland. Hitting the blogosphere with a bang, the lads have featured on notable press like NARC and Rock Era Magazine, as well as numerous playlists reaching an international audience. The latest addition to their well-received discography is ‘Ocean Drive’.

Following their single ‘Waiting’, ‘Ocean Drive’ is Motherland’s first release in 2022 (at least according to Spotify). With their highly polished and ever-evolving sound, the group aim to impact listeners with their music, but also connect with the melancholy issues facing people nowadays. ‘Ocean Drive’ touches on that beautiful topic of love where we give ourselves completely to our loved one. It’s a euphoric and intoxicating feeling, but it comes with a degree of vulnerability; Motherland has captured the essence of this complicated experience in ‘Ocean Drive’.

Recorded at In Heart Studios with George Collings, ‘Ocean Drive’ is a melodic arrangement of pounding drums, roaring guitars and warm vocals. Highly polished, the tune is a sophisticated morphing of the powerful instrumentation; however, each element can be heard as a prominent aspect within a harmonic whole – does that make sense at all? I need to note the impressive guitar solo joining the catchy choruses with toe-tapping verses.

Nodding to the sounds of 90s pop-rock, there is an upbeat joviality to the melody quite reminiscent of Green Day. Motherland shares that they have been told they have “…a nostalgic sound that is fresh but familiar and I’d like to say we really bring that exact feeling with this track.” Exploring and exposing new love with ‘Ocean Drive’, Motherland touches on human vulnerability and fragility in this toe-tapping song.
