MOTE – Bondage (2021)
MOTE is delving into an examination of control with his single ‘Bondage’. Inspired by the feeling of being terrified and uplifted by letting his guard down when falling in love, the track considers how we hold onto and lose control. Bringing dark vibes to alternative rock, the track is energetic and sexy in equal measure. As the first song in a new collection of work, it gets you excited to hear what else he has in store for us.

The energy of ‘Bondage’ comes through from the first droning tone. There is a heavy influence of industrial pop in the melody that drones and clangs through your senses. The music is full-on and only lets up for a moment to give you a chance to breathe. The arrangement of the melody is wonderful as it brings a feeling of tight control and letting loose to your ears. The industrial lines are constrained and bring pressure to your chest that lifts for the lighter tones which are quite freeing.
This movement is enhanced by the vocals that pulse into your veins. There is a slightly electronic feeling to the vocals that works perfectly with the industrial leanings of the melody. When the music lifts for a brighter feeling, the vocals rise to match. At these times, his performance is almost airy before it drops back down. Throughout the single, his performance is packed with energy and never really losing it. There is a strangely sexy vibe to the vocals that is quite different to anything else you might be listening to.
MOTE vibrates through your senses on a rush of industrial rock before easing the pressure in the rise and fall of ‘Bondage’. The single is full-on from the first second while bringing the sense of control and loss of control to sonic glory.
