Moontwin – Symbols (2024)
From ‘For Your Happiness’ to ‘Around and Around’, international duo Moontwin weave their web of haunting sound around The Other Side Reviews. Yet, despite our team only discovering the talented pair a few years ago, Moontwin has been intoxicating listeners since 2018 beginning with their well-received debut song ‘Butterfly’. Whimsical, wistful and moving from one space to another in a hypnotic hue, US-based Maple Bee and Bulgaria-based Zac Kuzmanov are a unique force to be reckoned with. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Symbols’.
Already seeing an evolution from dream-pop ‘Around and Around’ to an indie-pop meets dream-pop sound in ‘With The Birds’, ‘Symbols’ further showcases Moontwin’s evolving genre-bending style. An experimental pair no doubt, and we hear even more eclecticism in the new single with the hints of hazy synths wrapped in psychedelic chants anchored in a folk foundation.
Soft and soothing, Moontwin does what they do best with ‘Symbols’ – hypnotise, enchant and intoxicate listeners. Lightly lilting to a mesh of dream-pop and folk, the pair seem to lead you through a cinematic haze of foggy sonic forests. Quickly following the footsteps of Maple Bee, while she dances ahead in the mystical trees, you can become lost but also keep sight of the talented songstress travelling to an enchanted glen. Interestingly, while her twinkling vocals ensnare your senses, it is the folk sound that keeps an anchor amidst the wistful psychedelia.
While ‘Symbols’ can be viewed as a charming friendship fluttering with a laidback flair, the song is far more profound and complex. Conceived light one night, it is a “headfirst deep dive into a rich and immersive exploration of almost sleepy thoughts. Contradicting fears, wishes and dreams quietly plait themselves around the conscious and unconscious patterns…an intricate and beguiling journey wrapped in a strangely cosy sense of unease.”
In addition to the single, Moontwin released an official music video for ‘Symbols’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
