Moontwin – Doused In Blue (2025)
Floating along a kaleidoscopic sonic river with hazy fairy lights fluttering about the almost palpable sense of absolute, blissful harmony, Moontwin captures the joviality of languid tranquillity. In the same breath, Moontwin also places you in a sonic hurricane, all fairy lights gone to be replaced with pillar-to-post pushes of chaos. Finding the spot where melody and lyrics make more sense than reality, the European duo have you experience and not merely hear their music. The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘Doused In Blue’.
Drawing together the mastery of musicians Melanie Garside (performing as Maple Bee) and Zac Kuzmanov, listening to ‘Doused In Blue’ is like travelling along a calm river… actually, it’s calm to begin with before heading off on a rapid veering of tumultuous waves. Soft, soothing, tranquil folk sounds begin the journey with a glistening harmony of acoustic instruments – steady drums, a dynamic guitar, and percussion all balanced with Garside’s obscure vocals. With a swish of tranquil languidness, the river is flowing with a brief ripple here and there… wait.
Oblivious to the tumultuous waves lurking beneath with darker intent, it’s fun and light-hearted; before you know it, you’re rushing through chaotic rapids. Interestingly, the crazy part of the ride seemed to rise from the melody’s depths with Kuzmanov’s grittier vocals, a pulsating push of drums, and a soaring guitar quickly engulfing the boat.
Melodically, ‘Doused In Blue’ – the final track of the recently released album two – is a rip-roaring experience completely ensnaring your senses, stealing your soul and engulfing your mind, almost to the point of overwhelming confusion. Yet, the lyricism adds an extra profoundness and depth to the powerful sound. Moontwin explain:
“…a dreamlike journey… lives woven together through the seasons, their evolution both exquisite and pained. The song captures something of our common experience as human beings negotiating the passage of time.”
