Moonroof – Maybe Crazy (2022)

There are some songs that shine through the subtle layering of music and vocals. ‘Maybe Crazy’ by Moonroof is one of them, as the band brings a calming yet aggressive feeling to the soundscape, through a fusion of beats, melodics and vocals. Touching on both indie rock and dream pop, the single flows with a super catchy movement that drives through your senses with an unstoppable power.

Each note of the single has been perfectly crafted and selected to showcase the power of the band and their masterful arrangements. Since their debut in 2018, Dave Kim (vocals), Dan Rendin (drums), Francis Convery (guitar) and Kevin Randolph (bass) have been moving from strength to strength. Their engaging music has seen them play Philadelphia-area radio stations and share the stage with Chelsea Cutler at THON this year.

‘Maybe Crazy’ catches you in its lively flow from the first note which has you bopping to the sound. There is a base of indie rock in the melody that is softened in the higher levels by a light sprinkling of dream pop. The running feeling to the melody keeps you caught in the band’s web from the start of the track to the very last note. The fusion of pop and rock has this wonderful calming feeling that settles things in your chest you never knew were out of place. As you feel this ease overcoming your senses, the music hits a slight change halfway through that brings a more frustrated and aggressive vibe to the pulse of the guitar. This is really subtly woven into the infectious flows of the music, highlighting the prowess of the band. Through all of the layering and nuanced movements, there is a driving infectiousness that permeates the single and sweeps through your senses like an unstoppable wave.

As you are being pulled under the band’s spell by the melody, the vocals offer another layer of calming vibes. The delivery is soft and tender with a slightly hazy edge to the performance. This softness hides the more aggressive nature of the lyrics that creeps out at times, before flowing into the almost emo chorus. There is really a lot going on in this track that has been wonderfully layered into an extremely catchy movement. As you continue listening to the track, new nuances shine through, making you want to listen again to see if there was anything you missed. The more you listen to the track, the more you will find to fall in love with.

Subtle nuances are layered throughout ‘Maybe Crazy’ by Moonroof to create an infectious single that washes a calming cover over a lightly aggressive undertone. Both the melody and vocals have been wonderfully structured to bring a fusion of emotion that blossoms in your chest, filling you with calm tempered by frustration. The chorus brings a more emo edge to the track while retaining the balance of sound that makes this track so stunning.
