Moonlight Thief – Slip Away (2022)

With their single ‘Come Home’, Moonlight Thief looked at a past relationship with a melancholic lens tinged with a positive agenda. They are continuing their delve into relationships with their single ‘Slip Away’ which considers a broken relationship. Packed with sorrow and heartbreak, the track uses raw power and intimate lyrics to bring an understanding of these negative emotions.

As with their previous releases, the single balances darkness with light, as the sorrow of a broken relationship is tempered by the transformative energy of vulnerability. Inspired by the essence of humanity, their stirring music helps you pick up the pieces of a broken heart and take the first steps to moving on. The emotive power of the young duo’s music truly belies their age, showing a wonderful maturity and musical sophistication.

‘Slip Away’ opens with a delicate balance of strummed guitars and a slightly melancholic piano line. These two instrumental lines create the first tendrils of the tender emotions of the track. You can feel the sadness woven into a tug of heartbreak. The drums have your foot tapping to their steady beat as you are pushed further under the emotive flows of the melody. The negative emotions of the track are lightly sprinkled into the music and slowly build in your soul. Through the interplay between the high and low instrumentation, the duo builds a journey through heartbreak and into the hope of a brighter future. Around halfway through the single, there is a piano-driven bridge that really marks the turning point of the emotions of the track. This point is highlighted by the vocals and the slight uptick in hope woven into the music.

While the melody creates the first layer of emotion and lays the path of the emotive journey, it is Küpers’ vocals that really provide the push of the story. Her performance enters with a deep sadness that caresses your heartstrings. There is a whisper of emotion that rises into something more powerful as her performance hits out with its raw power. There is a plea wrapped in the understanding that the relationship is broken and can’t be saved. While powerful, there is also a wonderful intimacy to her performance that enhances the emotive flows. As the melody changes, her performance matches by taking the first steps to moving on. There is a final question that looks for closure to allow her to go forward without the past hanging over her.

Moonlight Thief balance the sorrow of a broken relationship with the transformative nature of being vulnerable in the emotionally moving ‘Slip Away’. The music brings the balance of emotions to life through the lines of the piano and guitar that form the first tendrils of the track’s story. Küpers’ vocals move from a whisper of pleas to the final question needed to move on and find the closure needed.
