Moon and Aries – Break The Matrix (Episode One) (2022)

When I hear the term ‘moon and Aries’, I immediately think of ethereal haziness wrapped in a velvety star-filled night sky with the Northern Lights in the background, and this Moon and Aries is just that. I don’t mean their music reaches us through a velvety star-filled night sky, but their synth-pop opera definitely sends your soul soaring. Founded in 2021 by German composer and producer Tom Aries and Canadian singer-songwriter Jordana Moon, the pair bring bright lights and a sense of peace to audiences.

Already featured on The Other Side Reviews with their track ‘Take Me Away’, this is not our introduction to Moon and Aries – but it always feels like the first time. Featured on numerous blogs, such as The Punk Head, FV Music Blog, Tanbay Hive Music Blog, The Further Music Blog and various playlists, Moon and Aries are reaching audiences across the globe. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the three-track EP Break The Matrix (Episode One).

Penned as part of a three-episode music series, Break The Matrix (Episode One) is a step away from their typical synth-pop opera style. Breaking the matrix, Moon and Aries incorporate trip-hop, soul and synthwave into a nostalgic sonic pool of water. Sending you adrift the glistening pool in a comfortable boat, the EP releases and relaxes listeners with its intimate, artfully constructed music.

Combining Aries’ delicate synth compositions with powerful beats and Moon’s spine-chilling vocals, all three singles have a cinematic ambience. The opening track ‘Closer and Closer’ sets the stage with Moon’s haunting vocals slathered atop Aries’ intriguing synth arrangement. It brings a lightness to the soul while retaining a fragile sonic haze. Interestingly enough, while ‘Closer and Closer’ is reminiscent of their synth-pop style; the next two tracks diverge showcasing versatility and evolution in their sound.

‘The In Between’ is a piano-driven single (sort of) where Moon and Aries find the balance between acoustic and synthetic. Once again Moon’s charming vocals send shivers down your spine with its haunting effect. The final track, ‘Losing Control’ also retains their operatic sound; however, the main vocals are Aries’ sharp, but also very rich tones. Backed by Jordana Moon’s hypnotic voice, there is a soothing quality alongside the brash male sharpness.

Overall, I completely adore Break The Matrix (Episode One). The beautifully crafted melodies complement the heart-breaking vocals. I cannot wait to hear the next two episodes of their musical series.
