Moody Mac – Any Longer (2023)
Singer, songwriter, artist and part-time videographer, Moody Mac pays tribute to yesteryear in his nostalgic music but still retains a contemporary vibe throughout. While his Spotify offers singles from 2023 only, Moody Mac has been writing songs for approximately 15 years since 2008. Originally working in the world of traditional hip-hop, Moody Mac tapped into old-school hip-hop tones; however, he proves he is not to be pigeon-holed adopting a pop-punk meets rap-rock style in 2023.
Opening 2023 with a bang, Moody Mac released his single ‘Any Longer’ preceding various critically acclaimed tracks like ‘Running’, ‘Cali Dream’, ‘Call You Out’ and ‘Moments’. One similarity exists in all of these singles – the personal, intimate narrative inspired by life in its entirety. In ‘Any Longer’, Moody Mac touches on the desperate consequences of substance abuse and addiction. He considers the detrimental effect of using “crushed pills, alcohol and marijuana” in his previous life hoping to connect and resonate with listeners facing the same situation.
Purchasing the instrumental to the single from producer Kisses Beats, ‘Any Longer’ was recorded and produced in a studio near Munich, Germany. While his most recent singles appear to be more pop-punk than hip-hop, ‘Any Longer’ illustrated Moody Mac’s eclectic musicality finding the line between hip-hop, pop-rock and pop-punk. With a hint of old-school Paramore, tinges of Lil’ Wayne and the harshness of Mayday Parade, ‘Any Longer’ speaks to audiences across the board. The nostalgic flair breathes through the rock/rap/whatever sound flitting us back to the best of the 2000s as a refreshing, experimental spark in a sometimes-stagnating music scene.
Bold, gritty and gruff, ‘Any Longer’ takes your hand through the mire of obsession navigating the storm with a vulnerability to touch your heart. Moody Mac has the quote “with no risk comes no reward” tattooed across his chest and, as lame as this sounds, I am so pleased I took the risk of listening to his music; the reward: an outstanding listening experience set to have me hitting the repeat button all day.
