Montrell – Friends (2020)

Montrell is an indie rock band from Leicester and London. The band is made up of Jonny Taylor (lead vocals, guitar), Alex Moorse (drums), Sam Delves (bass) and Michael Kurtz (vocals, guitar). Montrell has a new EP on the way and ‘Friends’ is a great taste of what they have to offer.

The basis of the track was to create a nostalgic sound. It proves that you do not need synth arrangements for modern music. The song arrangement was finalised over calls and recorded in Taylor’s flat.

‘Friends’ has a very soft opening with a slightly melancholic tone. The melody leads to Taylor’s charming vocals that put you at ease while you listen. The arrangement has a summery pop vibe to it but does not take itself very seriously. It is very easy to listen to and something you could have on repeat.

While the melody and arrangement ease you, the vocal performance establishes the connection with the track. Taylor has a hypnotic vocal performance that is enhanced with Kurtz’s backings during the chorus. Together they have a wistful note to their vocals which accentuates the pleading lyrics of the track.

Montrell creates a nostalgic sound full of wistful lyrics, melancholic tones and playful harmonies in ‘Friends’. The track has a pleading vibe without being too serious. The threads of bass combined with the vocal performance and arrangement make the song one to have on repeat.
