Monroe Moon – War (2022)

Described as an experimental indie-pop duo with poetic lyrics swimming in ethereal guitar, US-based Monroe Moon has a wistful sound to their poignant content. Influenced by the likes of Fiona Apple, The Smiths, Stone Roses, Sarah Vaughan, Ramones and Massive Attack, their music certainly is eclectic. Featured on The Other Side Reviews, FV Music Blog, Given To Rock, Less Than 1000 Followers and Obscure Sound, the husband-and-wife team are reaching audiences across the globe. The latest addition to their critically acclaimed repertoire is ‘War’.

One of the five singles to be released in 2022, Monroe Moon continues to set their soul-searching ways to music. In ‘War’, the pair adopt a folk meets indie-pop meets post-punk style. Following the slower, sadder single ‘Breath(e)’, ‘War’ has a somewhat upbeat vibe but with a sombre message lurking beneath. Referred to as an anti-war anthem, the track was written in 2021 commenting on the international US military conflicts. Oddly enough, the single coincides with the events in Ukraine, which potentially adds to its significance.

Recorded with producer Alex Almgren at New York’s Vice & Virtue Studios, the synth-laden single has a surreal vibe setting you adrift on a river of sound. What I find intriguing is how the otherworldly vibe of ‘War’ juxtaposes the melancholic lyricism. Bunny Monroe’s haunting vocals captivate your heart while Theo Malkin’s guitar adds another layer to the textured track.

Not at all similar to Edwin Starr’s iconic anti-war song ‘War’, Monroe Moon’s ‘War’ uses a smoother, more flowing sound to share their anti-establishment tendencies. Yet, while the theme is strong and powerful, Bunny Monroe’s vulnerable voice touches your heart in delicate tenderness. If this is how Monroe Moon is beginning 2022, I cannot wait to see what else they have in store for us throughout the year.
