Mongrel Dogs – Le Chat (2020)

Formed in 2015 in London, England, Mongrel Dogs is an alternative rock band with smooth following melodies and emotive lyrics. Comprised of band members from different countries across the globe (Australia, Mexico, Brazil and Scotland to be exact), the fantastic foursome uses their various cultural backgrounds to create a unique sound. Adopting a funkier tone than their previous heavy rock tracks, Mongrel Dogs release their single ‘Le Chat’.

Dragging the sounds of 70s rock bands into the 21st century with their own edgy twist, all of Mongrel Dogs’ songs have a particular originality in contemporary society. Much harder in previous years, 2020 brought a funkier and slightly cheekier element to their music. After some restructuring in mid-2019, the quartet added their talented vocalist Jonathon Palmer. Not one to criticise good music when I hear it, but Palmer’s smooth tone seems to have added a smirking sweetness to Mongrel Dogs.

Now, we speak about ‘Le Chat’.

Melodic from the get-go, there is a flowing cohesiveness between the drums and guitars setting the stage for a languid track; however, this is merely lulling you into a false sense of security. A highly harmonic single, Palmer’s rich voice captivates one immediately. Thing is, the group showcase their innovativeness and flexibility as a group with an effortless transition into a more up-tempo melody with a soul-stirring solo from guitarist Alvaro Alonso. Yet, the movement to a heavier tempo is smoothed over with Palmer’s warm tones at the end.

Regardless of your way with words, there are certain bands whose music is better felt than described and Mongrel Dogs fall into this category. Genre-defying, the UK-based band find their way into your brain, slide down your spine and ensnare your senses with a wink and cheeky grin.
