Miss FD – As Above, So Below (2022)

Through archaeological sites, we are able to glimpse into the past without ever truly erasing the mystery these sites unveil. The mystical touch of ancient civilisations has been picked up by Miss FD and woven into the three tracks of her EP As Above, So Below. Using a gothic flair, she takes her dark pop sound to new heights with a touch of ancient textures and hypnotic vocals.

Influenced and inspired by Göbekli Tepe, a Neolithic archaeological site, the EP connects the distant past to the present. Combining a haunting splash of mystery and mysticism with her underground electronic style, Miss FD brings something truly unique to our ears. Since the release of her debut single in 2009, she has been crafting and moulding her sound into the darkwave wonder we hear today.

The EP opens with ‘Summoning’, which sweeps you into the deep electronic movement with a gothic surge. There is a moving beat to the melody that pounds against your ribcage, before Middle Eastern tones twang through the higher levels of the track. Miss FD’s vocals enter with a mesmerising slink, bringing a rather mystical vibe to the track. Through the track, you get the feeling that something is rising from the depths. The lyrics cement this feeling as they call to an entity far beyond our current understanding. There is a gothic flow to the single that meets an electronic edge that makes you want to dance to the music. As an opening track, this song sets the dark wave tone of the EP.

‘The Veil’ has a heavier EDM and dance feeling in the opening, as the electronic tones stomp and pulse through the soundscape. The vocals pick up the extra dance edge and shiver through your muscles, coiling energy in them that waits to be unleashed on the dancefloor. The heavy beat pounds against the back of your brain, while the vocals tease what is behind the veil of mysticism left by the distant past. The chorus brings a further lifting of the darkness that clouds our sights and offers an alignment with ancient traditions. This turns into a static vibration of dance energy that is pure modernity compressed into a sonic pulse.

The title track ‘As Above, So Below’ closes off the EP with a serious hit of electronic gothic goodness. There is an ominous feeling to the slightly off-kilter opening that makes you think of stilted movements. This turns into a rising of fire embers that dance through the night sky, while the beats get your heart racing. The dance vibes that have been woven into each track remain in this one, but they hit in a very different way. Instead of dancing with abandon, you are called to some ancient ritual that moves your body, without you realising what has happened. Miss FD’s vocals move from gothic to dark pop before calling out a mantra that is going to be stuck in your head for long after the song ends.

Miss FD blends darkwave, dance and gothic tones across the three tracks of As Above, So Below, while diving into ancient mysticism. Each track will get you moving to the beat while calling to something ancient in your soul. There is a feeling of trying to push past the darkness of the distant past and understanding what lies behind the mystery.
