Mishkin Fitzgerald & The Chemical Perils – Legs Broken (2022)
With over a decade of experience as a performer and recording artist, singer-songwriter Mishkin Fitzgerald has captivated audiences as a vocalist and pianist. Fitzgerald is most well-known as the frontperson for the “orchestral punk-rock” group Birdeatsbaby, but now we’re looking at her new project, Mishkin Fitzgerald & The Chemical Perils. Come with us as we dip our toes into Mishkin Fitzgerald & The Chemical Perils’ debut single ‘Legs Broken’.
The first offering from this multi-faceted and genre-bending group, ‘Legs Broken’ is a kaleidoscopic swirl of an indescribable sound. A bundle of folk, punk and gypsy-rock, there is an old-fashioned ambience in ‘Legs Broken’ with a leaning toward the traditional Klezmer style. Interestingly enough, as toe-tapping as the Klezmer style is, a grittiness exists in the track oozing a rough, rugged quality in which you can easily get lost. Moreover, while a palpable grittiness comes through in the catchy choruses and high-spirited arrangement, a smoothness and smile-inducing flow are woven into ‘Legs Broken’.
Taken off their upcoming EP Graces Cradle, to be released in January 2023, ‘Legs Broken’ is a charming single to be played at full volume. What I find interesting is how theatrical the song is with sophisticated elegance in its tone, but there is also a raw bluntness in the execution. It is this juxtaposition of elegance and abruptness that pushes the theme of revenge with an “in your face” attitude.
“I always find that writing about revenge is the most fun – you can channel all your negative emotions and turn them into something that is cathartic. ‘Legs Broken’ is a good old gypsy-punk dancing song about getting your own back. Never piss off a songwriter – you might find yourself immortalised in a song, and not in a good way!” – Mishkin Fitzgerald on ‘Legs Broken’.
Fun and spirited, but with a ferocious attitude bubbling beneath the surface, Mishkin Fitzgerald & The Chemical Perils have us singing and dancing with their debut single ‘Legs Broken’.
