MINT – Devil (2022)

If Creedance Clearwater Revival had to have a child with Cream and it was raised by Bon Jovi, the chances are it would be MINT. A rather unique indie-pop meets alternative rock combination, there is a nostalgic air to MINT alongside a modern-day rock sound. This is my introduction to the group, which seems fair considering they have not released music for several years; however, MINT has received coverage from international blogs like Good Music Radar and various playlists. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Devil’.

After a six-year hiatus, the US-based trio are back with a blast of energy. Lead singer and guitarist Bradford explains that “MINT reunited a year ago after taking a six-year break due to my drug addiction and treatment from a decade of touring…” Why do we tell you this? Well, the single ‘Devil’ is inspired by these events and even conceived before Bradford became sober. He further shares that “…it’s the last song I ever wrote before I got sober. I wrote and recorded the vocals as I was coming down from a coke and ketamine bender, and you can still hear the drugs in my nose as I sing…”

Unafraid to take on provocative themes, MINT explores life in its entirety to create brutally honest melodies. Using a personal narrative, ‘Devil’ is a heartfelt, tender and moving single touching your soul from the first chord. Interestingly enough, the nostalgic air is retained in the song; however, there is an evolution in the band’s music. A tribute to the rock sounds of the early 90s, but also a brand-new sound that calls to contemporary rock tones. Perhaps this evolution is a representation of Bradford’s move from drugs and feelings of worthlessness to empowered and hopeful.
