Mindless Motion – Little Madness (2025)
Bending from the profound irony of jazz to the soul-stirring playfulness of funk, and a slice of indie-folk and indie-rock in between, Mindless Motion delicately explores the core of human emotion and presents it in all its glory and grit. Hailing from the Czech Republic – Prague, to be exact – the band draws together the musical stylings of Tereza Zajicová (vocals, guitar and violin), Fanda Xavier (bass guitar), Jakub Eben (drums), David Le Cam (saxophone, flute and keyboard), and Amélie Teršlová (keyboard).
Following their well-received single ‘Mesmerized’, Mindless Motion released their debut EP Little Madness which just happens to include ‘Mesmerized’ in its six tracks. If you were to determine who or what Mindless Motion is from the opening track, ‘What if I told you’, then you’d for sure lay the group in a funk meets jazz mould. Yet, they are anything but definable shifting from folk-inspired tones, blues, soul and a tinge of rock fluttering throughout the half-hour Little Mindless.
Sliding into our ears with soulful vocals, a funk-induced bass guitar, dynamic drums, a danceable keyboard, and the saxophone laying across with a seductive sheen, ‘What if I Told You’ is a big plaster of smiles, happiness and joviality; however, this is not all Mindless Motion is about. Drifting into ‘Little Madness’ and ‘Parasite’, a stronger sense of melancholy lingers in heavier, eclectic jazz and indie-folk. Then again, while profound jazz tugs at your heart, soul weighs heavy in ‘Danube’ with eclecticism laced in ‘How much it means’.
Alongside the traversing of eccentric jazz stylings brimming with a melodic harmony of instrumentation, Zajicová’s bold vocals stand out seemingly overpowering the instruments; well, I said seemingly. Don’t by any means think the rest of Mindless Motion is subdued. No, Little Madness is a confident expression of the sophisticated rise and fall to complement each individual while retaining a sense of individuality.
Melodically, the rollercoaster of music is an intriguing ride from yesteryear, but more depth is defined by the EP’s themes. From ‘Parasite’ as a “…cheeky mockery that belongs to our own thoughts…” to ‘Danube’ with its “…principle of surrender in the context of relationships…”, and ‘Little Madness’ staring at those “…periods when certainties are crumbling…”, Mindless Motion intricately captivate raw emotion, thoughts and passions in a six-track release.
It’s always difficult to choose a favourite song on such exemplary EPs, but ‘What If I Told You’ stands out in my esteem. Its impassioned playfulness and hyped happiness elegantly steal your soul leaving you in a kaleidoscopic twirl of sound. This is my introduction to Mindless Motions, and I strongly urge you to dive into Little Madness.
