Minami Deguchi – Weight Of My Crimes (2023)
If Bring Me The Horizon was to have a kid with Bullet For My Valentine but it was raised by Trivium and Green Day, the chances are that kid would be Minami Deguchi. Embracing his musical talent early in life, Deguchi stepped up to the piano at age 3 and continued learning until the age of 16. During this time, he also picked up a guitar and began singing during his teenage years. Considering he is only 19 years old it wasn’t that long ago that he began his musical journey; however, it was only in 2020 that he released original material. Rising from the ashes of Covid-19, his brand of pop-punk, pop-rock, alternative rock, and emo is turning heads far beyond his Australian borders.
Since the raw, bare-bones, almost crude grittiness of his debut ‘Ghost To You’, Deguchi has progressed in sophistication, style and elegance. From 2021’s hard-hitting single ‘Last Night’ to the powerful ‘Please Me’, Deguchi found a niche in the pop-punk sphere. His well-received album Sirens and Stalkers showcased his diversity and versatility in delivering pop-punk with gritty appeal – take ‘Romeo Killed Juliet’; however, he steps up with his new single ‘Weight Of My Crimes’ in refined production with suave confidence.
Produced by and featuring members of the Melbourne band Boycott Love, ‘Weight Of My Crime’ is a tumultuous swirl of chaos bound by a pop-punk sonic wrapper. Pounding drums crash behind dynamic guitars with a pulsating bass keeping time building the walls of the hurricane; however, slight jabs of sound slice at you with each instrument running forth before coming together in harmonic insanity. Just as searing guitars scorch the skyline and drums bubble beneath before the crashing crescendo, Deguchi’s vocals travel on a rollercoaster of sound and emotion.
Rich, warm and filled with provocative slivers of sound, you find yourself tossed from pillar to post with reckless abandon. Yet, just as there is a turbulent frenzy in the melody, there is a profound intricacy in its theme. Minami Deguchi explains:
“’Weight Of My Crimes’ isn’t just a song; it’s a journey of heartfelt apology and a profound journey of self-discovery. This track delves into the depths of remorse, particularly for actions that unknowingly shattered the heart of a loved one. It’s a poignant exploration of the human experience brought to life through emotive storytelling, authentic vocals, and exquisite musicality.”
