Mina Asfour – You Make Me Wanna Die (2021)

Those we love can hurt us so deeply that we often start to love ourselves less. This is something that Mina Asfour brings to sonic life with ‘You Make Me Wanna Die’. Written at a low point during a past relationship, it draws all the negative emotions bad experience in love can invoke.

While most of Asfour’s music is about tarnished love and failed relationships, each song has a unique take on the topic. Blending alternative pop tones with a variety of genres, he brings the light and dark sides of love to listeners. With a touch of gloom, he is able to journey down paths that others avoid while letting listeners know they are not alone.

‘You Make Me Wanna Die’ uses a gentle guitar to softly draw you into the single. The tenderness of the guitar line is like a light shining over rippling water at night. It is a nebulous feeling that shifts through your fingers when you try to grasp it. As the beats shuffling they add depth to the music before gently swelling on the chorus. The relative simplicity of the melody helps the vocals shine while enhancing the darker emotions they bring.

Asfour’s vocals are the real star of the single as he first hooks you with a sad confession. His vocals have a muted feeling to them in the first verse like he is confessing something to the dark that he is scared to say in the light of day. This comes to a head on the chorus when he lays everything out with a sad certainty. There is a light echo and layering of the vocals as the song progresses which adds to the twilight vibe of the music. As the song progresses, there is a flare of frustration and anger at the treatment he suffers.

Mina Asfour gently pulls dark emotions out into the light while helping you come to terms with them in ‘You Make Me Wanna Die’. The relatively simple melody enhances the vocals which are the real drawing card of the track. Through his performance, Asfour confesses and moves forward to shed the darkness and find something lighter.
