Miles East – Better Than Here (2023)

With over a decade on New York City’s recording scene as a touring drummer and session musician, singer-songwriter Miles East is an established name in the USA and among his peers. With the poetry of James Taylor, the flair of Paul McCartney, and a bit of something completely incomparable, East has devised a sound that is inimitable. Featured on various publications, radio stations and playlists, curators across the globe continue to turn their attention to this musical maestro. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Better Than Here’.

According to Spotify, ‘Better Than Here’ is East’s first release in seven years (give or take). 2016 saw him release the full-length album Ghosts of Hope presenting a heartwarming folk tone. In 2024, East will release his upcoming album Between Lightning And Thunder recorded and produced by Blake Morgan. Giving us a teaser of the anticipated album, the talented artist released the lead single off Between Lightening And Thunder – ‘Better Than Here’.

Focusing on live performances for the past few years, including shows at Bar’Lees, Rockwood Music Hall and The Turning Point (all available on his official YouTube channel), Miles East steps into the recording studio alongside Blake Morgan and Justin Goldner for Between Lightening And Thunder. In ‘Better Than Here’, the three musicians combine electronic guitars, acoustic guitars, keyboards and drums in a soothing melody. Interestingly, just as the song holds a steadfast flow of harmonic music without any attention being given to a specific instrument, a guitar solo slices through adding a rock flair however brief.

Sincere and tranquil, ‘Better Than Here’ is a kaleidoscopic tune of mellifluous comfort. Between Lightning And Thunder is set to be a sonic “voyage through the dark waters of a relationship in crisis…”. From desperate franticness to flowing hopefulness, the new album navigates the good, bad and ugly of love. ‘Better Than Here’ is the comfortable optimism drawn from a brooding veil of despair. East explains the song is “an ode to the boldness of buoyancy and hope, and to the promises we make to those we love when weathering dark forces.”

Moving, eloquent and filled with a gentle passion for love, life and music, Miles East captures hearts with ‘Better Than Here’.
