MIHI NIHIL – MOTH (2024)
While the members of the alternative rock group MIHI NIHIL might have fresh faces with youthful exuberance, each individual has been involved in the music industry for some time. Veterans? Not necessarily, but definitely with some impressive notches in each one’s belts. From touring with Jane’s Addiction and Iggy Pop, to backing up artists like John Denver and Bruce Springsteen, to outstanding performances at notable festivals/venues like Warped Tour, Coachella and Carnegie Hall – I told you those are some serious notches. Today, we take a gander at the foursome as MIHI NIHIL.
Formed four years ago in 2020, Mihi Vox (vocals), Benjamin Montoya (guitar), Nick Steinberg (bass), and Adam Alt (drums) started winning hearts with singles ‘Be There’ and ‘Vertigo’. Skip ahead a few years and the US-based quartet has several well-received single releases, a critically acclaimed self-titled EP in 2021, and now their most recent single ‘MOTH’.
Following their 2023 single ‘So Please’, ‘MOTH’ is MIHI NIHIL’s first step into 2024; actually, it’s more of a stomp. Unlike ‘So Please’, ‘MOTH’ leans further toward a 70s-esque classic rock style, but with flutters of 80s punk and 90s alternative rock slithering through the track. A song through the ages, MIHI NIHIL draw together different nostalgic sounds dragging it forward to modern-day audiences capturing the heart of generations with hard-hitting musical passion.
Potentially falling into the avant-garde spectrum, the mishmash of rock music collides with a psychedelic swoon caught in a tug-of-war with distorted grittiness. Recorded in a single take at their Culver City rehearsal space, chaotic frenzy floods the rush of kaleidoscopic music. A heavy bassline matches the “think sludge of electric guitar”, with hits of percussion waiting in the wings all pushing conventionalism in the forceful tune. Yet, for me, it is Vox’s vocals that enhance the single’s eclecticism. Wistful and haunting, but with sincere confidence, she wins your heart but also sends shivers down your spine.
