Mighty Brother – Rubia Marionet (2022)

Described by Offbeat Magazine as a “blend of Avett-Americana and Radiohead-esque rock”, US-based group Mighty Brother has an eclectic sound. Since their inception in 2015 as a duo, Mighty Brother has been releasing intriguing tunes and building a global following. The band now blends the talents of five musicians who are touring internationally, releasing well-received material and carving a niche in a sometimes-stagnating rock music scene. One of the more recent additions to Mighty Brothers’ discography is the single ‘Rubia Marionet’.

Featured on their new full-length album, Azimuth, but also released as a single, ‘Rubia Marionet’ is an elegant fusion of folk, funk, jazz and pop. An indie-rock band by nature, a strong Radiohead flavour is felt; however, Mighty Brother has found a way of weaving numerous genres into one boundary-breaking single. The melodic combination of drums, guitars, saxophone and vocals send you swirling about in a kaleidoscopic sonic whirlpool. Interestingly, each of the instruments brings a separate genre to the song – the saxophone adds jazz, the drums add a blues vibe, the guitars bring rock and pop designs, and the smooth vocals slather across in their rich tone.

While the fusion of different genres in the arrangements is intriguing, it is the transition from a smooth, mellifluous rock to a more upbeat sound, then back again to wrap up the melody in a brightly coloured package. Another element I find intriguing is how the transitions align perfectly with the theme of ‘Rubia Marionet’.

Using their natural storytelling skills, Mighty Brother connects with audiences in “an artistically unique manner…”; layers of laidback joviality are merged with a profound intimacy showcasing the band’s depth. In ‘Rubia Marionet’, Mighty Brother explores the issues of existential control, love, fear, angst and turmoil with a fictional puppet show. The band shares that the protagonist “Hero watches a puppet show and identifies with the puppet that has no control over her destiny…”

Bright and buoyant with happy vibes, ‘Rubia Marionet’ is a charming song; however, there is a depth and obscurity lurking in the tune making it even more exciting.
