Midnight Snowball Fight – Dot Dot Dot (2024)
The younger brother of The Strokes with Two Door Cinema Club as their best friend, Midnight Snowball Fight has been described as “literally the shit” (by a guy from one of their gigs), and “…battle of the bands material” by one of the performing bands. Similar to stuffing an inflatable boat back into its wrapper while inflated, Midnight Snowball Fight bring a punch of indie-rock that is nearly impossible to ignore. A bubbling combination of Sam Baker’s forceful drums, Alex Mears’ bold bass, Tom Castle’s powerful guitar and Devon Cogan’s rich vocals, the US-based group enchant you with a cheeky wink and big grin.
While Midnight Snowball Fight is garnering a following with their live shows (consider the “literally the shit” comment), they are ready to release their intriguing music to the masses. Recorded and produced at Sunday Coffee by Kyle Downes and Jay Nemeyer, with mastering by Nico G, the group’s debut single ‘Dot Dot Dot’ is a blend of youthful innocence, gritty vulnerability, and sophisticated elegance.
Despite this being the band’s debut single, maturity lingers along the rawness of ‘Dot Dot Dot’. Crashing across as a pure dose of indie-rock, drums and guitars carry the hard-hitting melody; however, it is Cogan’s vocals that give you the gut-wrenching, lost in Wonderland, twirling about with a sad smile feeling. Midnight Snowball Fight explain:
“’Dot Dot Dot’ was inspired by a date with someone I had been crushing on for years…it was one of those dates where it seemed like it might only last a couple of hours but ended up lasting all night… ‘Dot Dot Dot’ tried to capture the feeling of a new chapter in life is starting. The bad news came the next day… it turned out to be a one time get together and not a long-term relationship. The last line of the chorus deals with the dissonance of making such a good memory, but feeling like I need to forget to move on…emotional whiplash with a distorted guitar behind it.”
