Midnight Sky – Long Way Back To Town (2023)
The brainchild of singer-songwriter Tim Tye, Midnight Sky weaves old-school country and modern-day Americana in a distinctive sonic wrapper. Over the past 45 years, US-based Tye has been employed as a lawyer, so it is only recently that he committed to pursuing music and entertaining audiences full-time. For me, however, the sophistication of his music seem like he has been a full-time artist with years of experience in his belt. This is my introduction to Midnight Sky, so join me as I jump into the critically acclaimed discography.
Although it seems Midnight Sky has only one album to their name – based on Spotify, at least; Last Hope For The Modern World is his third full-length album and ‘Long Way Back To Town’ is taken from this release. Following the chart-topping title track, ‘Long Way Back To Town’ has the signature Midnight Sky sound with a glint of pop twinkling in the background.
I could call ‘Long Way Back To Town’ a piano-driven tune, but that might be an overstatement. Bold drums match a blues-driven guitar with a moving piano running throughout the melody. The melody has a steady flow carrying you along like being in a boat travelling through a softly rocking river; however, the race of harmonies and inspired piano solo kick the boat giving ‘Long Way Back To Town’ a rough edge. The hint of classical skill within the raw piano gives it a slight wink of “well, check me out”.
Inspired by personal experiences and observations, Tim Tye uses personal narratives to connect with listeners. ‘Long Way Back To Home’ is a toe-tapping track but also a poignant one. It “tells the story of the struggles and hardships one must overcome to find true love again after heartbreak” – so, there is a profound melancholy in the song although it is hidden by an intricate sense of hopefulness.
