Micki XO – Behind My Eyelids (2024)

Unafraid to tackle controversial topics in a somewhat censored society, singer-songwriter Micki XO brings a profound but alluring style with her Gen-Z attitude. With breathtaking charm, the US-based artist uses vintage pop tones to reach into the grittier areas of life; then again, the alternative pop new-ness reflects raw honesty in modern-day music. We discovered Micki XO a couple of years ago with the dark pop single ‘Light Me Up’ and remained astounded with her moving 2022 single ‘Fake Gold’. Today, we take a meander down her musical journey in the single ‘Behind My Eyelids’ – want to join us?

Following her well-received track ‘Fake Gold’, ‘Behind My Eyelids’ is Micki XO’s first release in two years. While a strong synth-driven form of pop is continued in ‘Behind My Eyelids’, there is a shift to something more sophisticated in the new single. I am unsure what this difference is precisely, but an obscure maturity can be felt with bolder, richer vocals. Perhaps there is a greater confidence in her musicality, or it might be the strength of the well-produced single eliciting heavier depth. The thing is, an indescribable change can be heard…or rather felt despite the similarity to previous work.

As I mentioned, Micki XO is unafraid of provocative themes and ‘Behind My Eyelids’ captures this aspect perfectly. Exploring the topic of medicinal marijuana, she tackles the escapism and catharsis it offers when dealing with mental health. Micki XO explains:

“’Behind My Eyelids’ is more than just a song; it’s a message of hope to anyone who has ever felt like they are permanently stuck in chaos and desperate to get out that there is a means of escape…”

In addition to the single, Micki XO released an official lyric video for ‘Behind My Eyelids’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube channel.
