Michelle Lockey – Who Hears The Broken (2024)

Known for her confident performances, engaging lyricism and moving melodies, singer-songwriter Michelle Lockey has you hooked from the first chord. Soulful and serene, although many of her songs are about rather serious topics, the award-winning musician blends a unique brand of folk, pop and indie-pop for all to enjoy. This is my introduction to US-based Lockey; however, she has made waves internationally for several years with powerful performances, award-winning tracks, song placement in various TV series and films, and even has her own podcast Sync Licensing Minute. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Who Hears The Broken’.

Following her well-received single ‘Why Don’t They Choose Me?’, Lockey keeps the light burning with her profound new track ‘Who Hears The Broken’. Recorded and produced with multi-instrumentalist Stephen Joseph Antonelli, who happened to play all the instruments on the track, ‘Who Hears The Broken’ is one of those singles that make you cry on the inside and out because of its intricate beauty.

An immersive experience, listening to the acoustic folk tune is like stepping out into a sonic forest without any real direction, and then Lockey comes in to take your hand and navigate the misty woods. Lockey’s hushed vocals are a friend leading you through the eerie forest holding you close during the particularly scary bits. Antonelli’s symphony of sound acts as a light burning bright with powerful guitars, charming piano and soul-stirring strings. Interestingly, while the arrangement is comfortable, a haunting edginess lurks in the background delicately highlighting fear, vulnerability and human fragility.

Taken from her upcoming album, a project exploring various intimate themes like regret, self-doubt, strength and resilience, ‘Who Hears The Broken’ is an intense expression of the loss of innocence. Lockey explains:

“This song explores the stories and emotions around a loss of innocence when very young. It goes on to deal with the struggles that many of us may face and helps the listener to realise that they can be anything they want to be. This is my personal story but can apply to many of us and I hope that it helps the listener to feel strong and that they can accomplish anything…”
