Track of the Day: Michael Ransom – Put It All On Red

Inspired by the likes of The Kinks, Beatles and Rolling Stones, UK-based singer-songwriter Michael Ransom brings the classics back with his music. However, he’s not all about old-school with his influence from Kendrick Lema, Kanye West and Schoolboy Q. Take the old, mix it with the new and you have Ransom’s unique mishmash of sound. Formed (for lack of a better word) this year, Ransom is a bit of a newbie, but he is already captivating listeners. Featured in Pop Fad Blog, Sinusoidal Music, YMX and various playlists, he’s quickly building a loyal following.

As with his single ‘Good News Comes In Threes’ (read our review here), ‘Put It All On Red’ was penned during the Covid-19 lockdown. Lockdown may be frustrating, but it has certainly given people time to consider existential topics, become more creative and watch a lot of boxsets. In ‘Put It All On Red’, Ransom takes on the theme of relationships and how beginning a new affair can be a risk.

From the first note, ‘Put It All On Red’ sends you adrift a smooth river of sound heading off into a kaleidoscopic sunset. The combination and harmony of guitars, drums and keys have not only a flowing arrangement, but place you at ease with its soothing sound. What I find interesting is how the layers and textures seem to separate Ransom’s vocals from the instrumentation. Placed atop the melody, his rich voice enchants you sharing an intimate tale while still merging with the melody forming a heartfelt whole.

Ethereal and otherworldly, Ransom’s dulcet tones easily charm listeners while connecting with them on a deeper level. The personal narrative enhances the intimacy of the track, while the softness increases its intensity. Filled with genuineness, brutal honesty, sentimentality and sincerity, ‘Put It All On Red’ is a song to send shivers down your spine and leave you breathless.
