Michael Fordays – Can’t Stop (2024)

Knowing exactly what he wanted to do with his life from early on, Michael Fordays stoked a fiery passion for music and leapt into the world of guitar rock. As with many teenagers, actually guitarists of any age, the teenage Fordays (also known as Michael Jensen) imitated legendary guitarists rocking out in his bedroom with dreams of concerts while basking in the glow of music and loving every second. Skip ahead a few years and the US-based Fordays reached those extensive tours, sold-out concerts and glowing moments of music with various bands, including the industrial band KMFDM and Los Angeles group Overbreaker. Joined by Dave Klein (keyboards and drums), O.C. (horns), Drew Rodman (horns), John Kang (trumpet), Jose Sanchez (trumpet) and Rich Herbert (saxophone), Fordays (vocals, guitar and bass) started releasing critically acclaimed music under the name “Michael Fordays” in 2013.

Following the well-received single ‘The Stones Never Move’, Fordays released his new single ‘Can’t Stop’. Similar to ‘The Stones Never Move’, ‘Can’t Stop’ has a silvery thread of alternative rock woven into the sonic tapestry; however, a shift to harder, heavier swirls of hard rock and classic rock bursts forth in the new tune. Recorded and produced at Dave Klein Recording with Klein and mastering by Nick Townsend, ‘Can’t Stop’ has an enchanting classic wrapper but with sophisticated layers of rock alongside the edgy funk-tinged horns.

Finding a line between funk, jazz and rock, Michael Fordays ensures he is anything but pedestrian. Pushing the conventional genre boxes, his blurring of styles is brave and exciting as Fordays makes his mark in the US rock music scene. ‘Can’t Stop’ drags me back to the days of the iconic Chicago with Fordays tapping into that unique style. Then again, his eclectic shimmering of 90s hard rock kicks in that vintage jazz-rock familiar with a refreshingly new sound.

Listening to ‘Can’t Stop’ is not merely enjoying a hard rock tune blasting through our speakers, it is an immersive experience. A gut-wrenching rush of guitars flares alongside pounding drums pushed by explosive horns, so there’s a bit of a sonic hurricane tossing you from one side to the other. Yet, Fordays’ rich vocals bring a hard-hitting forcefulness while acting as a friendly anchor within the melody.
