Michael Chap Edward – Mary’s In Love (2023)

Inspired by the likes of Elton John, The Beatles, The Lemon Twigs, and ELO, singer-songwriter Michael Chap Edward is a retro artist with a modern flair. Making his mark on the scene with ‘Generation Y?’ in 2018, Edward was bringing old-school power-pop to the fore reaching audiences across the globe. Since then, features in notable publications, such as Sinusoidal Music, continue to sing his praises. This is our introduction to Michael Chap Edward, and we want you to join us as we delve into his latest release ‘Mary’s In Love’.

Hailing from Los Angeles, USA, Michael Chap Edward has a unique style leaning toward 80s icon Elton John. Following his track ‘Generation Y?’, Edward leans even further toward to the 1980s pop style with ‘Mary’s In Love’. Blending the obscurity of Sir Elton with the upbeat charm of The Beatles, ‘Mary’s In Love’ is a light-hearted power-pop ballad oozing feelings of joviality and optimism. Tossing you into a kaleidoscopic whirlpool of music, Edward twirls you about with a whimsical charm; however, there is a darker side to the single lurking below the surface.

Just as the melody can hold its own with the bubble-gum pink sonic wrapper, the song is more profound than imagined. Edward reminds us that “Mary’s in love” with a repetition of the phrase near the end packed with a Beatles-style bounciness. The thing is, the melody might be happy but touches on “…substance abuse, hardship and co-dependency…” Mary is definitely in love but what is she in love with?

Recorded at the home studio of Radio Project One’s Marcus McMillan, Michael Chap Edward reaches out to you with an optimistic sense of joy. Yet, just as you take hold of the happy wrapper, he lures you into the darkness behind the rainbow-filled sonic glass.
