Mia Grace – Wait (2021)

Mia Grace may be a beautiful 23-year-old woman, but despite her young age, she is already a music veteran. At age 13, Grace was already writing and recording professionally, but now we see her honing her intriguing sound. Daughter of Prince Be from P.M. Dawn and industry mogul Mary Serra, Mia Grace has a lot of knowledge in the industry but this doesn’t hide the innocence in her delicate songs.

I would say Mia Grace has a reminiscence to Ariana Grande or Sia but I would be incorrect in doing so. Yes, Grace falls in line with contemporary R&B meets pop, however, her sound is quite inexplicable. Merging elements of old-school R&B with synth-led hip-hop beats, Grace has a soothing sound plunging you into a hazy swirl of sound. This is the case with her new single ‘Wait’.

While there is a common synth-driven tone to ‘Stuck’ and ‘Wait’, Grace showcases innovativeness with the tone and pace of each song. ‘Stuck’ is an upbeat single with a groovy bassline, whereas ‘Wait’ has a greater intensity within the hushed instrumentation and vocals. Both place you in a whirlpool of sound, but there is a sense of vulnerability in the latest single.

A beautifully layered track, ‘Wait’ has several textures and tones working in melodic harmony. With a rhythmic flow, the new single has a languid style but the strong beats add a dynamic upbeat quality. If the melody were a flowing river, Grace’s vocals would be a shining thread in a dark pool of water – this is the best way I can describe the weaving of strong vocals and the powerful melody.

While the hushed vocals seem to whisper with nostalgic melancholy, this is not really the case. A reflective song but there is no melancholy to the muted lyricism. Instead of lamenting over lost relationships, ‘Wait’ is an anthem for empowerment and self-belief. With confidence and a no-nonsense sound, Grace pushes the concept of inner strength in ‘Wait’.
