Metrophobia – Kryptonite for the Superman (2022)
Influenced by the likes of Pavement, Guided By Voices, Pixies, Sebadoh, Catherine Wheel and Pixies, Metrophobia is a genre-bending duo. Already known to each other, the two Swiss/Spanish musicians reunited in 2021 for this new project – and, man, are they turning heads. Featured in Rising Artists Music Blog, Sinusoidal Music, Roadie Music, and various playlists/radio stations, Metrophobia has made a splash across the globe. The latest addition to their repertoire is the single ‘Kryptonite for the Superman’.
Described by Edgar Allan Poets as “…hypnotic and intriguing…”, Markus Gmür (vocals) and José Garrido (guitar, bass and drums programming) add a modern edginess to old-school sounds. Following their album Silent Treatment, ‘Metrophobia’ is a tribute to 90s pop-rock but with a contemporary rock-inspired infusion. I hate comparing bands but if I had to, I’d say ‘Kryptonite for the Superman’ walks the delicate line between All American Rejects and Bowling For Soup.
Using Gmür’s gruff vocals, Garrido’s pounding drums and dynamic guitars, ‘Kryptonite for the Superman’ has a gritty rock sound but with a soothing flow to it. Energetic and easy to listen to, you could get your toe-tapping to the single; however, the seemingly upbeat and jovial tune juxtaposes the melancholic lyricism. Touching on the “struggles of a woman searching for a decent man, tired of ending up with egocentric losers pretending to be someone else”, there is a sense of anxiety. The thing is, while ‘Kryptonite for the Superman’ seems desperate it is also filled with empowering sincerity.
In addition to the single, Metrophobia has released an official music video for ‘Kryptonite for the Superman’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
