Mermaid Avenue – Bones (2023)

For almost a decade, Australian group Mermaid Avenue has been crafting, honing, composing and sharing a distinctive alternative country sound. Established as a regular feature on the Brisbane music scene, the six-piece has garnered a loyal following with their energetic shows. While local audiences have the honour of hearing/seeing them live, Mermaid Avenue is turning heads on an international scale with coverage from various publications, radio stations, and reaching the finals of several reputable songwriting competitions. From their well-received debut album Temptation and Half The Truth in 2018 to the 2022 album Sugartown, Mermaid Avenue presents themselves as a naturally talented force of nature.

Following the critically acclaimed single ‘Fear of a Bleeding Heart’, Mermaid Avenue adopt a classic country sound in ‘Bones’ but with a contemporary Americana flair – familiar and nostalgic with a breath of freshness. In the new single the group captures people’s hearts on an intimate level with a vulnerable melody and heartfelt lyricism.

Listening to ‘Bones’ is like walking through a hazy forest with slightly eerie flits of wind passing by your face. Mystical and wistful, the track lurks around your feet; however, just as there is delicate whimsy, ‘Bones’ is bold and confident. Chris Wong and Mike Kearey’s guitars drive the melody with powerful forcefulness. Matching the dynamic guitars, Mark Egan’s bass carries through the track as Nathan Poetschka’s drums bring up the back. Tinged with Casey Chandwick’s organ and Casey Lee’s keys, ‘Bones’ is a sophisticated twirl of magical music.

While Peter Clarke’s obscure vocals bring richness to the well-textured melody, his prowess as a profound lyricist sparkles as bright. A delicate reflection of human relationships, there is a fragility to ‘Bones’; yet, just as there is fragility, ‘Bones’ is also brimming with empowering hopefulness and resilience.

“’Bones’ is a song that emerged from a personal place of introspection and hope. We all experience moments of disconnect and discord in our relationships, and this song is an earnest reflection of the journey one takes to repair and rekindle the bond with someone they deeply care about.” – Peter Clarke on ‘Bones’
