Men’s Apparel – Two-Tone Lover (2020)
There seems to be something universal about on-again-off-again companionship. Dealing with this is the foundation of ‘Two-Tone Lover’ by Men’s Apparel. Nick Horzi, the man behind the music, takes this global concept and whittles it down to tasty guitars with a sprinkling of psychedelic droplets.
Inspired by French film scores, the single has a bit of funk thrown into the mix. Written and recorded while in quarantine, the single showcases Horzi’s instrumentation and production skills. He started with the rhythm guitar section and the rest of the song fell into place, unlike the relationships depicted within. The single will also feature on the band’s upcoming EP.
The funky beats hit you from the first moment of ‘Two-Tone Lover’. There is an infectious tone to the single that makes you move to the beat. The guitar lines lead you to Horzi’s vocals that have a depth and groovy quality to them. You can hear the influence of film scores on the melody as there is a cinematic vibe to it that flies over you.
At times, the vocals have a haziness to them that seems to melt into the melody. The light harmonisations add to this intermingling of elements. The psychedelic touches press on you through these zipping background notes that undulate below the guitar lines. This is such a fun song to listen to and you can’t help but smile as it plays. This might not be the right reaction to the lyrics and subject matter, but there is no way to stop it.
Tackling on-again-off-again relationships, Men’s Apparel takes a groovy beat, throws in some funky guitars and lines it with psychedelic notes for ‘Two-Tone Lover’.
