Meghan Pulles – mamma (2023)

From the soulful kick of alternative rock and indie-folk to the soothing tones of melodic pop, singer-songwriter Meghan Pulles proves she is not to be pigeon-holed. With the sincerity of Joni Mitchell and the power of Regina Spektor, the US-based artist composes melodies full of passion and heartfelt tenderness. From her debut single ‘Shelter In The Storm’ in 2019 to 2022’s ‘Anxiety’ and her album Winter Rose, Pulles has been critically acclaimed as an “emo-positive artist” using music to heal wounds.

Known for raw honesty, authenticity and reflection, Meghan Pulles dips into the mire of human fragility and tugs out bright cathartic expression in her moving melodies. Following the philosophical single ‘father, oh father’, she brought a sense of strength, empathy and solace to wandering souls in their darkest times. In her new single ‘mamma’, she tugs that thread of vulnerability and how love is still present in the darkest pool of abandonment. Taken from her upcoming album ear baby, ‘mamma’ touches on one of the themes on the record – generational trauma within the family.

“This song is a song about accessing your inner child and the feelings that remain when you have been emotionally abandoned by your parents… It’s dedicated to anyone who has ever felt abandoned in any way by people that are supposed to love them.” – Meghan Pulles on ‘mamma’

As with her previous material, Meghan Pulles adopts an obscure sense of surrealism in her experimental single ‘mamma’. Intimate, eclectic and oddly enigmatic, you are swept off into a sonic river from the single’s first chord. A nostalgic flit of old-school Madonna and Kate Bush pushes the obscurity and distortion of the single; however, there is a mellifluous flow in the off-kilter melody. Bubbling across pebbles, a piano slides alongside percussion before Pulles’ bold but whimsical vocals draw you into a deeper swell of sound.

Mystical and magical, Pulles delicately explores the intricate fragility of humans in her breathtaking single ‘mamma’.
